Step into the future of design

The future of transportation will be smarter, greener and faster. The shift has already begun, but what can we expect in 2050?

Designer Takumi Yamamoto set out to find the answer. Using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud, he worked with modeler Tomislav Solina and Dassault Systèmes’ CATIA R&D Design team to conceptualize a vehicle that embodies the convergence of science, technology and art: the OLOID.FD.

Overcoming the challenges of remote collaboration and a limited timeline, the team imagined a high-performing, light and sustainable electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft with the functionalities of 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA’s Creative Design Experience.

The creative project empowered the team to experiment with novel design methods to imagine both the vehicle and the design studio of tomorrow.

With this project, I wanted to challenge conventions, not like a sci-fi movie but to create something new to inspire the future of transportation.

The project integrates aerodynamics, sustainability, simulation – all the different aspects of the product. In the end, it’s not just a beautiful vehicle, it’s a full experience.

Creating a full-scale design experience

From the beginning of the project, the team aimed to create a sustainable vehicle that would fully adapt to its passengers.

They explored different approaches to sketch, shape, simulate and visualize the eVTOL on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud, and at the end of the project, they had not only designed a visionary eVTOL but also an experience.

Collaborative design

The team worked together seamlessly from different parts of the world with virtual whiteboards, dashboards and communities.

Immersive design

Sketching in virtual reality helped determine the right proportions and ensure optimal user experience from the start.

Parametric modeling

Design by algorithm both enriched the model with organic shapes and inspired the designers to innovate further.

Virtual twin technology

The digital replica enabled the team to explore diverse design alternatives.

Simulation

Aerodynamics was virtually tested and enhanced to improve performance and sustainability.

3D rendering

Visualizing the aircraft in various material, color and lighting scenarios environments helped the team try out and pick the best options.

The team brought together collaboration, design and simulation in a single environment on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud. This centralized digital approach enabled them to quickly and efficiently imagine a unique and sustainable aircraft, as well as to enhance their creativity and envision entirely new ways of working.

We can draw in space, imagine ideas and concepts at scale very quickly – just with a VR helmet and controllers.
