Dome enters the race to improve quality and reduce time to market for cutting-edge racing cars with PLM solutions

CATIA V5 Composites Design boosts efficiency from design creation to manufacturing

Tokyo, Japan, October 31, 2006 ─ IBM and Dassault Systèmes (DS) (Nasdaq: DASTY; Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA), a world leader in 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced that Dome Co., Ltd., a developer and manufacturer of racing cars, has been using PLM solutions to streamline the design of racing cars and other low-volume vehicles since April 2001. Dome leverages CATIA V5 Composites Design for composite part design and manufacturing, to improve product quality and reduce time to market.

“With a low-volume production rate, our challenge is to create high-performance cars within ever shorter deadlines. CATIA V5 Composites Design and IBM Intellistation have allowed us to shorten lead time,” says Akihiro Oku, Technical Director at Dome. “Composite materials make up around 80 % of our racing car parts. Lightweight, stress and erosion resistant, composites can be molded into innovative shapes, but are expensive. PLM has enabled Dome to streamline composite part design and manufacturing, freeing resources for innovation and developing creative solutions in response to customer demand. This is critical for continued success in our market.”

“Dome decided to differentiate itself through innovation and high quality. Our PLM solutions help them combine these strengths with profitability and faster time to market” said Chris Bahr, Director of PLM Solutions, IBM Software Group, Asia Pacific. Nikos Calcafacos, Dassault Systèmes’ PLM General Manager, Japan, comments, “CATIA V5 Composites Design gives Dome a competitive advantage, by easily incorporating composite elements into their cars, making them lighter and faster.”

CATIA V5 Composites Design provides a collaborative environment that covers the entire composites process, from preliminary and detailed design to manufacturing requirements.  Engineers can focus on creating optimal designs to fully exploit composite advantages. An important advantage of CATIA V5 Composites Design stems from its synchronization mechanisms, which allow engineers- no matter their location- to work simultaneously on the same design.  CATIA V5 Composites Design connects seamlessly to production equipment.
