Electric motorcycles for more efficient travel
In 2021, Electrum, a new brand of electric motorcycles, was created by Indonesian firm PT Energi Kreasi Bersama – a joint venture between TBS Group and GOTO Group.
The mission is to support Indonesia’s shift to low-carbon, sustainable transport and to ultimately help the country’s government achieve its vision of net zero carbon emissions by 2060.
The first Electrum vehicle is a two-wheeler designed to be affordable and sustainable to run. It features swappable batteries so riders can continue their journeys without waiting to recharge. Its innovative design has fewer moving parts than traditional motorcycles, which means zero vibrations.
The company is currently developing its R&D and engineering capabilities. It hopes to complete its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in 2024.
As a startup, you need to develop your products as fast as possible with a small team. With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud, we have improved communication and collaboration which helps us to develop our products more quickly and effectively.
Challenge
In order to compete with existing electric vehicle manufacturers in Indonesia, the team behind Electrum needed to imagine, develop and industrialize its new electric motorcycles at speed. However, its existing software stack was inhibiting it from doing this because it had to constantly transfer data between applications.
Electrum realized it needed a single technology platform that could support the end-to-end process from systems engineering to mechanical and shape engineering.
It required the ability to imagine, sketch and prototype transportation and mobility concepts in 3D, as well as the capability to validate product performance with simulation to perform cross-discipline optimization. It also sought functions for managing project activities, deliveries and reviews and wanted to be able to connect disparate teams and facilitate effective collaboration across borders.
As a startup, the company wanted to achieve all of this without having to invest in additional IT resources, hence it sought a cloud-based solution.
Solution
Having learned from local partner Nusantara Secom Infotech (NSI) about how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform could help it drive innovation effectively, the Electrum team adopted Dassault Systèmes’ platform. This solution will enable both the development and the industrialization of the Electrum electric mobility concept within a single, comprehensive and collaborative environment.
By choosing the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud, deployment was easy and immediate, without the need for lengthy installation processes. After a two-hour workshop, the team were able to begin using the solutions right away.
Benefits
Using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s creative design roles in CATIA, the team behind Electrum is able to establish end-to-end workflows and ensure continuity of the design process.
The platform also supports SIMULIA’s multiphysics simulation so that the team can utilize MODSIM to concurrently simulate different aspects of their upcoming prototype at the same time. The common user interface and modeling and simulation capabilities ensure the highest levels of efficiency and productivity, resulting in significant time savings and increased revenues.
Highly intuitive, especially for Electrum’s designers who have used CATIA V5 in previous jobs at other companies, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud ensured that designers were able to get up to speed from day one. Electrum’s geographically dispersed teams were able to immediately share and visualize 3D simulation results. They can collaborate in real time from any location by simply using a web browser. Having everything available from the cloud also relieves Electrum of the need to invest in an IT department. It can instead focus on product innovation with reliable access to the newest release.
Meanwhile, NETVIBES’ data analytics provide data science capabilities that reveal information intelligence, allowing all users at Electrum to gain insights that drive industry innovation and business performance.
Recognizing how easy it is to scale its use of the platform, Electrum plans to adopt DELMIA for manufacturing in the near future.
Focus on Electrum
Electrum is a clean and economical transport brand conceived by PT Energi Kreasi Bersama (EKB), an Indonesian-based company owned by TBS Group and GOTO Group. The joint venture not only designs and manufactures innovative electric motorcycles, but also works to ensure that the infrastructure and ecosystem for EVs in Indonesia will be in place, all in line with the government’s ambition to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2060.
